Scams doing the rounds in NZ

What they look like, and what to do. If something feels off, it probably is. Hang up, don't click, and call us if you're not sure.

Sample content: update this list each week, or have the assistant draft it for you to approve.

"Your computer has a virus" calls

Very commonPhone call

What it looks like

"Hi, I'm calling from Microsoft (or Spark, or One NZ). We've detected a problem with your computer and need to remote in to fix it."

What to do

  • Hang up. Microsoft and internet companies never call you about viruses.
  • Never install anything a caller asks you to.
  • If you already let them in, turn the computer off and call us.

Parcel redelivery texts

Very commonText message

What it looks like

"NZ Post: your parcel could not be delivered. Pay a $2.99 redelivery fee here: [link]"

What to do

  • Don't click the link. Real couriers don't charge redelivery fees by text.
  • Forward the text free to 7726 to report it.
  • If you entered card details, call your bank straight away.

Unpaid toll or fine texts

CommonText message

What it looks like

"You have an unpaid toll. Pay now to avoid a late penalty: [link]"

What to do

  • Don't click. Check any toll or fine by going to the official website yourself.
  • Forward the text free to 7726.

"Your bank's fraud team" calls

Very commonPhone call

What it looks like

"We've seen suspicious activity on your account. To protect your money, we need to move it to a safe account."

What to do

  • Hang up. Your bank will never ask you to move money or tell them a code.
  • Call your bank on the number on the back of your card.

"We've changed our bank account" invoices

Hits businessesEmail

What it looks like

An email from a real supplier you know, with a normal invoice, saying their bank details have changed.

What to do

  • Always phone the supplier on a number you already have before paying new details.
  • Turn on multi-factor sign-in so your own email can't be used for this. Take the health check.

"Your mailbox is full" emails

CommonEmail

What it looks like

"Your Microsoft 365 storage is full. Sign in here to keep receiving email."

What to do

  • Don't sign in from the link. Open Outlook or office.com yourself instead.
  • If you typed your password in, change it now and call us to check your account.

Think you've been scammed?

  1. If someone has remote access to your computer, turn it off or unplug the internet.
  2. Call your bank straight away if you gave card or banking details.
  3. Change your email password from a different device, and turn on multi-factor sign-in.
  4. Report it to Netsafe or the National Cyber Security Centre (formerly CERT NZ).
  5. Call us on 03 548 0007. We'll check your computer and accounts are clean.
