This notice explains how we handle your personal information across all the services we provide - in-store, on-site, and by remote support. We've written it in plain English because that's how we do everything.
When we say 'personal information' we mean identifiable information about you, like your name, email, address, phone number, payment information and support queries. It also includes information stored on devices you give us to work on - see 'Your data on devices we service' below, because we know that's what matters most when you hand over your computer.
This notice should be read together with our Terms and Conditions. We handle personal information in accordance with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020.
When we refer to 'we' (or 'our' or 'us'), that means Call a Geek (2012) Limited, based at 16 Halifax Street, Nelson 7010, New Zealand. We provide fast, friendly and great-value computer services to homes and small businesses in the Top of the South, and to customers across New Zealand through our remote support service.
We only collect personal information we actually need to serve you:
We collect this directly from you wherever possible. If you don't want to provide certain information, that's fine - but it might mean we can't provide some services.
When you give us a computer, phone or other device to repair, our technicians may be able to see files stored on it, and some jobs - like data recovery, backups, or transferring you to a new computer - involve working with your files directly. Here's how we treat that:
Tip from the geeks: it's good practice to know your passwords and have a backup before any service - we can help you set that up.
Our website includes an AI-powered chat assistant to help answer questions about our services, pricing and processes. When you use the chat, your messages are processed by our AI technology provider (Anthropic) to generate a response, and conversations may be logged and reviewed by our team so we can check the assistant's accuracy and improve our service.
Please don't share sensitive information in the chat - such as passwords, payment card numbers, or personal details beyond what's needed for your question. For anything sensitive or account-related, call us on 03 548 0007 or email service@callageek.nz instead.
We use your personal information to provide the services you've asked for, communicate with you about jobs and quotes, invoice and process payments, keep service records, and let you know about things we think may genuinely interest you (you can opt out of marketing at any time). We don't sell your personal information to anyone.
We only share personal information where it's needed to serve you or where the law requires it:
Some of the providers we use store or process information outside New Zealand - for example, our website hosting and AI chat provider are based in the United States. Where we use overseas providers, we choose reputable companies and take reasonable steps to ensure your information is protected by safeguards comparable to those in the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020.
We're committed to protecting your personal information and use appropriate technical and organisational measures to keep it safe. No method of storage is completely secure, but security is our trade - we take it seriously for our own systems just as we do for yours. If we become aware of a privacy breach that has caused, or is likely to cause, serious harm, we'll notify you and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner as required by law.
We keep personal information only as long as we need it - to provide services you've requested, maintain your service history, and meet legal, tax and accounting requirements. After that, we delete or anonymise it. Working copies of data from your devices are deleted promptly after the job is done, as described above.
Under the Privacy Act 2020 you have the right to ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, and to ask us to correct it if it's wrong. Just get in touch via the Contact page and we'll respond as soon as we reasonably can.
You can also opt out of marketing communications at any time, ask us to delete information we no longer need, or raise any concern about how we've handled your information. If you're not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz.
If we change this notice, we'll update this page and the date at the top. Changes won't apply retrospectively.
Questions about this notice or the information we hold about you? We're always keen to hear from you - call 03 548 0007, email service@callageek.nz, or use the Contact page.
