Windows 10 End of Life Support – October 14th 2025

Windows 10’s time is ending.

This is a friendly reminder from the team at Call a Geek that Windows 10’s time of service is coming to a close.  Within a little over a year (October 14th 2025), Windows 10 will no longer be supported by Microsoft.  

What does this mean? 

Much like operating systems of the past (Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8.1) Windows operating systems get slowly harder and harder to maintain due to age and new requirements for security. 

Windows 10 came out in July 2015, meaning Windows 10 is nearly 10 years of age! 

10 years ago, we did not have the security requirements we do today. These days we use our computers for pretty much everything from the usual items like banking, emails all the way to social media and full business management entirely from the computer. 

New security requirements require new hardware. This is why Windows 11 requires a specific age of computer because the chip needed was only installed on machines after 2019. (Meaning, if your computer is over 5 years old it might not support Windows 11!). 

Windows 11 was released October 2021.  So, all its major issues have been ironed out.  We have been using Windows 11 since its release and therefore are very comfortable with recommending this upgrade. 

What should I do? 

If your computer was purchased 5 or less years ago, you should be fine to upgrade to Windows 11 before it becomes a requirement. Upgrading to Windows 11 requires no additional license so it is free direct from Microsoft. If you need a hand installing Windows 11, feel free to come to us and we can help! 

If your computer is older than 5 years, you may not be able to install Windows 11. This will mean after October 2025 your computer will no longer receive updates. Don’t panic! That is still a whole year away, but you need to plan to get a new computer before then.
